More News of Fire Extinguisher Inspection Scams
At least four businesses in Spring Hill, FL have been victims of fraudulent fire extinguisher inspections over the past few weeks. A man named Allen Rhyndress entered the businesses, offered his services, “visually inspected” the fire extinguishers, collected cash payment, and provided a hand written receipt.
Rhyndress was found out when one of his victims contacted her regular fire inspector and was advised that Rhyndress was not employed there. The victim then called the sheriff’s office when Rhyndress returned to her store as a customer.
Detectives interviewed Rhyndress and learned that he had been performing visual inspections of fire extinguishers, believing he did not need to be certified to do so as long as he did not alter the extinguishers. The motive? He was trying to raise money to support his mother, who is suffering from health problems.
Bond was set at $4,000.
