Buying Fire Extinguishers for Offices

Posted on: August 17, 2011

If you own a building in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC, you know how important it is to have working, well maintained fire extinguishers to keep your building safe. Of course, fire extinguishers aren’t the kind of thing you can just pick up at an office supply store—especially not with the number of fire extinguishers you need to have in a standard sized office building. Fortunately, at Guardian Fire Protection we make buying fire extinguishers for your office easy!

Schedule your fire extinguisher consultation today by filling out the form to the right or calling 301-861-0972.

What kind of fire extinguishers do you need in an office?

Since you probably won’t be dealing with too many hazardous metals (Class D) or flaming cooking fats (Class K) on an average work day, it’s safe to say that most typical office buildings should have ABC fire extinguishers installed throughout the hallways. Class ABC fire extinguishers will put out fires caused by “ordinary combustibles,” including wood, paper and cloth (Class A), as well as burning liquids like gasoline (Class B) and electrical fires (Class C).

When installing fire extinguishers in your office, make sure you place them in areas that are easy to reach in a pinch and easy to escape from if the flames get too high. Never put them in closets (even for safe keeping) or in corners with no access to the outside. For best results, install at least one office fire extinguisher on every floor in your building, preferably no more than 5ft from a door or stairway that leads to safety.

How many fire extinguishers should you buy for your office?

As we mentioned, you should buy at least one office fire extinguisher on every floor in your building. If you want the maximum levels of protection, you should buy enough fire extinguishers for your office so that there is an extinguisher within 75ft of all points of the building. Also remember that a standard office fire extinguisher (2A10BC rating) will only be able to extinguish a maximum 3000 sq ft area, so be sure you have enough extinguishers if you think you’re going to need more (although by this point you should really be out of the building and letting the fire department handle it).

If you’ve been looking to buy fire extinguishers for your office in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC and want to buy then from a licensed professional fire services company, call Guardian Fire Protection today! We can install fire extinguishers in your office (no matter how many you need) as well as inspect and test those extinguishers once a year.
