Fire alarm systems consist of much more than smoke detectors on the walls or the fire annunciator panel in the front of your building. The whole fire alarm system is much deeper, with many elements kept out of sight. As a result, you might not be able to check every element of your fire alarm system every day. During a routine quarterly fire alarm system inspection, the various components of your fire alarm system are exercised and tested to make sure they're all in good working order. This includes all manual pull stations, alert/alarm methods (strobes and horns), smoke and heat detectors, exit/emergency signs and lights, duct detectors, annunciator panels, the main alarm panel and any communications sub-panels and battery backup supplies. After the basic fire alarm system inspection is complete:

• Every fire exit will be checked to make sure the doors are easy to open and that there are no objects blocking the exits. In addition, the fire alarm system inspection technician will check to make sure every emergency exit door is conspicuously marked so that people will have no trouble finding it.
• Your fire alarm system inspection technician will check to make sure there are enough emergency exits in your building and that your building does not exceed its maximum occupancy. Making sure the number of emergency exits is sufficient for the amount of people in your building is critical as an emergency situation is likely to trigger a stampede otherwise.
• The fire alarm system inspection technician will check to make sure there are no highly flammable substances in the vicinity of your building. If flammable materials are essential to your building’s function, the fire alarm system inspection technician will make sure they are stored away from high risk areas.
• A fire alarm system inspection will check to see if your fire extinguishers and fire alarm pull stations and devices are located in the proper places so that people can get to them right away in the event of a fire.
• In addition to fire extinguishers and fire alarms, a fire alarm system inspector will check to see if your fire sprinkler heads are located in the proper areas and are spaced out properly.
